NARRATIVE: Do Not Open.EXE

Do Not Open.EXE
Written by Dan Kotov, 11b

Last year my attention was attracted by the growing interest in a cyber-legend about an .exe file, called “do not open”. Besides, what also excited my brain was the alluring obscurity of this myth. The story told about a mysterious file, opening which will drive you crazy. However, for the reason that my character is more skeptical, I didn`t honestly believe in this tale.

However, one day, in January, I, as always, came back from school at around 5 p.m. and found out no one was home. “What an exceptional stroke of good luck”, I whispered to myself, because five tests that day had exhausted me like hell. I decided to have a shower, crawled onto my bed and almost instantly fell asleep. I woke up an hour later, but I was still alone. I didn`t know what to do, so I just decided to surf the web. I don`t remember how, but I found myself on a web-site which automatically started downloading a .rar archive. With no fear at all I clicked it to open. You can`t imagine what type of emotion I experienced that moment. It was a mix of both absorption and dread. With my trembling hand I double-clicked on the “do not open.exe” file and literally nothing happened, I only noticed the loading indicator pop-up for a second, but eventually nothing happened. “Ha-ha”, I thought “I was damn right! It`s nothing more than a myth”. Relieved, I went to the kitchen in order to make myself a dinner.

Right when I was about to start cooking I noticed my fingers bleeding, however, there were no cuts on them. I instantly dashed to the balcony to breathe fresh air, but that didn’t help, so I decided to douse my head into the snow, which I did straight away. It helped. Though, in half a minute blinding white snow changed into black as coal. Fifteen seconds later, I was struck by a horrifying pain caused by the piercing echo in the ears. Gradually, my ability to stand was being taken away. I remember writhing in agony and then waking up.

I opened my eyes to see myself lying on my bed covered with sweat. I gazed at the computer, which was turned on with the opened .rar archive on its display, I rushed to the keyboard, frantically deleted the archive and murmured “Wtf was that?”…
