CAREER PLANS: psychologists

Larisa Sharapova, 9a

To begin with I`d like to say that choosing a career isn`t a simple matter especially now when I`m only 15 & not mature enough. Firstly, you should consider all requirements of the job which you are going to choose. Secondly, you must be aware of all difficulties & disadvantages involved in this profession. Thirdly, you should know if this job is in demand now. Unfortunately, unemployment rate is very high nowadays & it`s hard to find a job. Finally, you need to be realistic about your interests, abilities & personal qualities not to make a mistake. For instance, if you like singing in a band now, it doesn`t mean you will be able to earn a living doing it in future. If you know English perfectly well but hate socializing you won`t make a good interpreter. As for me, at present I consider becoming a psychologist. I know that there are many advantages & disadvantages to doing this kind of job.

One of the main advantages of being a psychologist is that it is a sociable job, because the work of a psychologist includes communicating with many people, the ability to understand, listen, help in a various everyday situations which I like doing. Secondly, it is in demand, because now it is difficult to meet a person who at least once didn`t communicate to understand the inner word of a person, to explore his or her mental state. In addition to that, the profession of psychologist is creative requiring continuous development and improvement. Furthermore, it is well-paid, as the job needs a lot of skill. In addition to that, these specialists become so called self-psychologists, as they get the ability to understand themselves in the course of study.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages to becoming a psychologist. Firstly, it is exhausting, because the main difficulty of a psychologist in any field is the emotional risk of burnout. Moreover, they have responsibility for other people, as psychologists give people advice; they sort of program the future of this person. For instances, if a psychologist makes a mistake & the client who follows this wrong may not be entirely successful. Besides that, licensing system for private practitioners is not perfect, conduct surveys, workshops and write frankly delusional books, casting a shadow on qualified colleagues and the specially in general.

Also, I know that good professionals in this sphere must to be patient, because some people can be very restless. They have to be knowledgeable to know how to help people. It is important to be calm, as psychologist shouldn’t feel nervous or anxious about people`s problems. It is essential to be friendly, polite and sympathetic, as in this job it is very important to listen. Good psychologists must possess good communication skills, because different people need to have a different approach. Finally, they have to be intelligent and tolerant, because there are many different people & psychologist should understand this.

All things considered, becoming a psychologist is a good idea for me, because in my opinion, I`m suited for this occupation. First of all, I am aware of all the disadvantages involved. In addition to that, I am patient, calm, logical and knowledgeable. Moreover, I`m interested in Biology and Literature. Finally, I`m good at conflict resolution and possess good communication skills. Anyway, I still have some years ahead to make a final decision. But now I know for sure that I must focus on such subjects as Biology, Chemistry, Literature, because they will be necessary for my future career.
