CAREER PLANS: psychologists

by Kate Korolenko, 9a

To begin with I’d like to say that choosing a career isn’t a simple matter especially now when I’m only 14 and not mature enough. Firstly, you should consider all requirements of the job which you are going to choose. Secondly, you must be aware of all difficulties and disadvantages involved in this profession. Thirdly, you should know if this job is in demand now. Unfortunately, unemployment rate is very high nowadays and it’s hard to find a job. Finally, you need to be realistic about your abilities, interests and personal qualities not to make a mistake. For instance, if you like singing in a band now, it doesn’t mean you will be able to earn a living doing it in future. If you know English perfectly well but hate socializing you won’t make a good interpreter.

As for me, at present I consider becoming a psychotherapist. I want to follow in footsteps of my mother, so I have the first hand information about this profession as my mother has shared her experience with me. There are many advantages and disadvantages to doing this kind of job. One of the main advantages of being a psychotherapist is that you can understand human thinking, behavior, emotions. When you studying for a psychotherapist it is important to understand why person acted this way and not otherwise. Also, it is a good opportunity to better understand yourself. Furthermore, there are many different directions in psychology, so the choice is wide. You can develop in all of them, if you want to. You help people, despite the fact that in some situations people need a lot of time to deal with their problems. In addition to that, you have flexible working hours in private practice. A private psychotherapist can refuse a client and work with those ones he likes. Also, you can choose how, where and when to work especially if you are a demanded psychotherapist.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages of becoming a psychotherapist. Firstly, this is a very difficult mental activity. You need to be able to hear the client, look for logical chains in his words, and analyze everything he says. In the end, you need to push the client to answer a question. After all, a good psychotherapist doesn’t answer clients’ question, he is trying to make the client find it. Moreover, not everyone can work with human negative side. Listening to someone’s troubles and trying to help them isn’t a simple matter. Besides that, you can’t help everyone. You will see unhappy people every day but you will not be able to help all of them. Someone’s sorrow is inconsolable and someone rejects specialist’s help. Furthermore, you will have a difficult career start. Everyone needs an experienced psychotherapist. In addition to that, everyone wants you to solve their problems. Your friends, friends of their friends – everyone strives to express their problems and get help.

Also, I know that a good professional in this sphere has to be patient, calm and organized. It is important to have logical thinking and understanding people’s problems. In addition to this, a good psychotherapist needs to possess good communication skills. In my opinion, I have all these qualities, and I am always open-minded for new information. All things considered, becoming a psychotherapist is a good choice for me because in my opinion, I’m suited for this occupation. I am aware of all difficulties involved. What is more, I am interested in psychology. Anyway, I still have some years ahead to make a final decision.
