TO DO OR NOT TO DO: Roman Bryzhatyi, 9a

How I Did Sport
Roman Bryzhatyi, 9a

Nine years ago I took up karate. I did this sport for seven years. Karate is a combative physical activity. Karate is highly skilled and tactical, and all competitors are required to have a high level of skill, experience, speed and dexterity to be successful in Karate competition. The main point of karate competition is to gain more points than your opponent. You receive points for throws, arm hits and leg kicks. For an arm hit you gain 1 point, for a leg kick in belly 2 points, for a kick in head 3 points and for a throw you gain 3 points. You receive a fine if you hit opponent’s head too hard. If you gain 3 fines you will be disqualified. I used to train in 38 school because there was a big gym. To attend karate you need to have special gloves and leg protection. Professional athletes need a gum shield, body protection (and extra chest protection for females), shin pads and foot protectors. This sport develops team spirit builds your stamina, trains your muscles, keeps you fit, trains your heart and develops ability to concentrate. Besides being traumatic, I haven’t found any cons of this sport.

I used to go to the karate club “Olympic”. Now it is called “Fortis”. When I attended it our club had only one gym. However, now “Fortis” has about 5 gyms all over Nikolaev. To attend this club I paid a fee of about 600 hryvnas I can’t remember. I attended it for seven years.

We had training sessions three times per week. It lasted about an hour. On Mondays we used to train muscles. On Wednesdays we used to practise different combinations. And at Friday we used to fight one another stand in sparrings. As for me, we had a perfect coach. He was perfect because he always supported us and could give advice. From security we had only gloves and leg protection.

When I attended karate I did my best to show good results. Also I took part in competitions. One time I won the first place. Moreover I have won other awards. However I had strong opponents so sometimes I lost. I didn’t give up, one of the pros of sport is that it builds character and teaches to win and to lose and to be determined. I gave up because I had an operation and I had no time for both studying and karate. At present I go kickboxing and I like it because it gives me benefits which karate gave me for many years.
