TO DO OR NOT TO DO: Sofiya Nedbay, 9a

Dancing Has Changed My Life
Sofiya Nedbay, 9a

I am a professional ballroom dancer. Ballroom dancing is a kind of sport where a pair of people (especially a boy and a girl) dances and takes part in different competitions. Ballroom dancing includes ten dances which belong to two different categories. The first category is Latin or Rhythm dancing. It includes 5 quick and energetic dances. They are Cha-cha-cha, Samba, Rhumba, Pasodoble and Jive. The second category is Standard or Smoothe dancing. This type of dancing is slower and more classic. It includes Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Quickstep. To take up Ballroom dancing you must buy special equipment. The most important thing without which you will be not able to dance is high-heeled dance shoes. If you want to take part in competitions you have to buy a dress. And of course if you want to dance you have to find a person that will teach you to. Dancing gives a lot of benefits. People feel more confident and uninhibited when they are able to dance. However, dancing has some disadvantages. Firstly, it is very expensive to go dancing on a regular basis, because to become a good dancer you have to train a lot, dancing classes are not cheap, especially with a qualified coach. You also have to buy a beautiful dress if you want to be the first in competitions, the one which will attract judges’ attention.

As for me, I attend the folk dance ensemble “Grace”. It is located in the Regional Palace of Culture next to the children`s town “Skazka”. I took up dancing almost 9 years ago. I still remember my first training session, my first coach and my first dance shoes. Nowadays training is very different from my first training sessions. When I only took up dancing, I took only solo classes twice a week. Now, I am included to the main cast of “Grace”, that is why I train 3 times a week with all the members of the main cast. My training session lasts for 1 hour.

To be honest, I am so grateful to my mother for giving me a possibility to dance. I feel that it is something that makes me unique. I think that dancing made me feel more comfortable and confident. I can easily distinguish the girl who has been dancing and the girl who hasn’t. I want my children, especially if it is a girl to dance. Through all my dancing career I have taken part in lots of competitions. I always do my best to show good results. That is why I often win the first places. For every first place you are given a special award – a medal and diploma. Every ballroom dancer has a “book” which is something like a daybook at school. In our school daybooks teachers write down marks, but in dance daybooks your results are written down. However, I do not always win the first prices. There was a competition where I was the last. I had strong opponents and that is why I lost. Dancing taught me not to give up. One of the pros of sport is that it builds character and teaches to win and to lose and to be determined.

Finally, dancing gives me a lot of possibilities. To give example, I can already work at such an early age. I began to train people when I was 14. The first work I had was to create a wedding dance for a couple. At first I felt nervous because I had never worked with adults. However, after the first training I didn`t feel confused any more. In a month our dance was ready and we had the last dance lesson. My “pupils” were so grateful and it gave me a lot of pleasure. Then they sent me the video from their wedding and words of gratitude, so I felt so happy that began to cry. Thanks to the ability to dance and communicate with people I now can get a job and earn money, that even some adults do not earn. To cap it all, dancing has changed my life and I`m not going to give up!
