EXEMPLARY WORK: BOOK REVIEW By Arthur Shamyan, 10a

How To Be British
By Arthur Shamyan, 10a

Recently I have read a book from the collection How To Be British. It was written by Martyn Ford and Peter Legon. This book contains 32 chapters. They all are about British traditions and things that you must do to become a True Brit. I really enjoyed reading them, because all chapters are very interesting and exciting. Now I am going to tell about 3 chapters, that I enjoyed most.

Chapter 6. Complaining. This chapter tells us what British people cannot stand. They can't stand, when someone makes a fuss. An example of fuss is complaining about poor service. The Brit says "Just think for a moment, would you like to do their job?" So, the idea is that you may purse your lips or grit your teeth; you may raise one eyebrow quizzically, but don't complain.

Chapter 7. Politeness. This chapter is about British politeness. The main idea is that you must use such words and expressions as "Sorry. Please. Thank you. After you. Allow me." If you want to make a good impression on British people, you must learn how to apologize, how to reach out to people and just be polite.

Chapter 9. Pronunciation. It is clear, that this chapter is about pronunciation. Te main idea is that even perfect grammar and vast vocabulary will not help you, if no one can understand what you are saying. The most interesting and funny are the Tongue Twisters. For example: "One windy Wednesday, wealthy widow Wendy Williams went to visit Westminster vet Victoria Vince to view her lovely violets." If you practise such Tongue Twisters, you will undoubtedly improve your pronunciation.

This collection is really exciting and extremely interesting. If you want to learn British traditions and even become a True Brit, you should definitely read it. I advise everyone to do it!
