RED LADY
by Nastya Bychenko, 8d

“Defeat? I do not understand the meaning of this word.”

It seemed that everyone had heard about her and at the same time no one had seen saw her. But those who knew her personally claimed that the world had never seen women like that. She differed from the others not only by her unearthly beauty, but also by her sharp mind. She trusted no one in her decisions, sometimes not even her heart. But who was this mysterious stranger? Oh, her line of work was very specific. She specialized in the irretrievable borrowing of especially precious items from wealthy people with bad hearts. Someone would think she did that out of nobility, but no. She believed that the worse a person was, the bigger purse was.

But what could make a decent girl from an aristocratic family become a thief? She was of noble birth. She was considered a member of the Darwish family. But her father's ill-gotten gains forced her family to flee her hometown. Her mother loved her husband dearly, so she could not leave him. This led them to a day when Tauriel woke up alone to find her parents and her sister Betty had been taken by a noble lord and she hadn't even been noticed. She tried for years to track them down, but in vain. And so 16-year-old Tauriel stood on the bank of the river and ripped the sorrow and grief from her heart and drowned them at the bottom of the river. She made a promise to herself that she would never repeat her mother's fate, giving in to her feelings and forgetting about her children. However, not everything was in the past and there were things that forever left an imprint. When you met this girl, you could tell that she was at least a mistress who ruled the world. Her proud posture, facial features, her gait and impeccable manners spoke of this. You could always see the ice in Tauriel's eyes behind the green veil. But the ever-present sparkle of slyness lit a fire. Oh yes, she was an exquisite thief.

Every her missions was accomplished perfectly. She accomplished every goal she set for herself. No one could think that she would ever make a mistake. Each of her tasks was unique, like an interesting quest. It was an ordinary rainy evening. Tauriel was sitting by the fireplace, enjoying the crackling of the wood. She pondered her plans for the future. To everything else the girl was very attentive, so she noticed the door handle turning silently and pulled out a loaded revolver. Nothing expressed tension in her, only her concentrated gaze. She was sitting in her chair as if an old friend had come to visit her, not a stranger who might want to kill her. A man entered the room. His face was hardly visible because he was wearing a hat and a cloak.

"I must admit I am astonished, Miss Darwish, you were not as easy to find as I expected."
"You, like any man, underestimate women."
"Before I met you, it was like that, but you planted a seed of doubt in my head."
"Well, then you must know that I haven't used that name in years."
"Oh, yes, red lady."
"You forgot to introduce yourself, sir."
"You don't need to know my name. I only came to warn you. You've recently made a serious mistake and you may pay for it."
"Why should I trust your word?"

It is not necessary to recount their entire dialogue, but the stranger reported that the man from whom she had stolen very valuable papers learnt about she. But he knew that Tauriel wouldn’t make a simple deal, so through a long search he found leverage. The man found the girl's sister, Betty. At first the girl could not believe it. But the facts spoke for themselves. After all these years, she could finally see her sister. However, she would have to pay for it with her life. After all, she couldn't give one document to two people, the owner of the document and the customer.

"I only have one question left."
"I'm listening."
"Why did you decide to help me at the risk of your life?"
"Let's just say. A man once helped me out in a very difficult situation, and in return he asked me to keep an eye on you and to assist you if necessary. I'm just keeping my word."

And then the day came and she was ready for the visit. Everything went perfectly, as usual. Her plan didn't let her down. And there she was, cradling Betty in her arms. Yes, for the first time in years she felt extremely happy and relieved. But a thousand thoughts were running through her head at the same time. "What to do next? How to live? After all, you have to be responsible for a child's life, and it can't be called an exciting quest." However, do not spoil the meeting of two relatives by sad thoughts. After all, every story has a happy ending, at least for someone, I’m sure.
