The Investigation of Sergey Yesenin’s Death
The investigation was conducted
by the police detective
Anastasia Sidorchuk
On the 28th of December 1925 in one of the rooms of the Leningrad Hotel Angleterre Mr.Ustinov found the corpse of the famous Russian poet Sergei Yesenin. It was stated that the poet hanged himself. It was the day when I began the most mysterious investigation of my life.
I arrived immediately to investigate the crime scene. The first thing that caught my eye was the chaos and the terror, which saturated and absorbed the whole room – the clothes, which were scattered, the fallen chandelier on the floor and the beveled white nightstand behind the table, and horribly unnatural position of the corpse - his right hand was slightly raised and ossified in an unusual fold, swollen face was frightening. His neck was tightened to the loop on the pipe with his face turned to the wall, and with his right hand grabbed the pipe. I examined his body and found a cut above his elbow of his right arm, the scratches on his left hand and the most suspicious – the bruise under his eye. In the middle of the forehead, above the bridge of the nose, I noticed a dent groove. A few spots of unknown origin were found on the right pant. I began to understand that this case had no relation to the suicide, however we found no evidence indicating the crime…
At first I questioned Mr. Ustinov – Yesenin’s friend, who had found his dead body. He told me that he had paid attention to the fact that Yesenin had strange behavior, he suffered from depression, so Ustinov wasn’t embarrassed by the fact that he had been able to kill himself. He told me about the letter, which Yesenin had carefully put in his pocket shortly before the day of his death, adding that Ustinov should read it later. However, he didn’t say anything about the content of the letter.
I went to the reception to question the staff. They told that Mr. Ellrich visited Yesenin at 8 pm on the 27h of December. Therefore the last person who saw Yesenin might have been his close friend - Wolf Ellrich. I went to question the only person who might have known something about that evening. Wolf showed me a crumpled piece of paper, which Yesenin had given him the day before his death. He told me that Sergey had said that there had been no writing ink in the hotel room and he had had to write with his own blood. It was unbelievable. It turned out that Yesenin’s last poem "Good-bye, my friend, Goodbye" was written with his own blood.
Already two witnesses told me about a certain letter in which Yesenin says goodbye to his friend… I felt that Mr. Ellrich knew more than he told me. His eyes were so frightened, his voice was trembling… Finally he confessed in being guilty before Sergey. I asked him to explain it, but he was attacked by the hysteria. He was in the screeching halt.
It should be noted, that Yesenin didn’t suit the Soviet regime. The Soviet government accused Esenin in "an attempt of the counter-revolution", he was often taken to the police because of fights and scandals. The reason for the revenge could serve the poem "The Land of Scoundrels" in which there is an obvious allusion to the personality of Lev Trotsky. That’s why the authorities could have ordered the murder. Young people listened to his opinion and that could make them take his position.
The case was closed, and my evidence was deemed inconclusive. The case is still drown in mystery, gossips and intrigues. However, the real truth must be revealed to million of people who worship the name of this poet.
