HOW TO BE BRITISH
Julia Kolchik, 10b
I have read a book under the title The How To Be British Collection. The authors of the book are Martin Ford and Peter Legion. The book tells about traditional values of the reserved, polite, pet-loving, tea-drinking British nation.
I would like to tell about my favorite chapters about British humor, food, pronunciation, nicknames and pets .This book tells that in Great Britain they eat a lot, have strange sense of humor, love pets more than kids, speak quickly and have good pronunciation.
HUMOR
Everyone knows about interesting British sense of humor. If you want to live there you must learn how to understand British humor, because it is important part of social life. They like jokes about toilets; trousers (when they fall down); restaurant diners with flies in their soup; little men (usually called Willy) with very large wives; doctors and patients with strange things wrong with them. The authors give advice how to practice sense of humor.
FOOD
There’s their famous “full” English breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausages, grilled tomatoes, fried mushrooms, fried bread, baked beans, black pudding, kippers and porridge. British don’t understand visitors, who never try these delicacies and eat pizza in continental-style cafes.
PRONUNCIATION
Many people know British accent. It is famous, because they speak quickly and it is difficult to understand. The authors tell us that grammar is not important and you can learn to speak like British through tongue twisters.
TERMS OF ENDEARMENT
The British have a reputation for coolness and formality, so visitors are often surprised at their use of familiar forms of address such as dear, love and darling, even with strangers. The best response to such familiarity is a pleasant smile. But if you want you can learn and practice terms of endearment.
PETS
Pets for British are important part of life. The True Brit knows that theirs pets are better than the majority of human beings. In Britain the phrase “It’s a dog’s life” is an expression of envy. Pets are considered to be a full part of the family. In British supermarkets a lot of goods for different pets can be found.
