HEALTH PROBLEMS: Maria Kostenko, 11b

True Story
Told by Maria Kostenko, 11b

I want to share with you a true story which happened with me about three months ago, which reveals the drawbacks of healthcare system in Ukraine. That was not a pleasant experience for me and now I will tell you why. Well, I had a running nose without any additional symptoms such as a fever, a sore throat, sneezing and others, however, also l had splitting headaches especially in the evenings. I can't say that was unbearable, but a incessant snivel made me go to hospital. My father until the last moment said that everything was ok and this was a stupid idea. That was the end of the summer, so he thought I just exaggerated.

Properly speaking, I arrived at the public hospital. My GP gave a reference to the ENT, who referred me to the radiologist. When I returned with my radiograph to the ENT, the specialist told I should undergo a treatment in the local day hospital. Do you know how much time I needed to wait in queues on that day just to hear this phrase without any explanation? Near 2 hours, despite the fact that I had come there early morning!!!

'How will I spent 2 weeks in the hospital, if l have to go to school every day? Where is this day hospital? Why should I be hospitalized? Will I be just idling in a ward?' and other thoughts visited my head. Hysteria even started exactly in the lobby, when I had just entered the office. I started crying and sniveling and couldn't stop. When I told my mum about it, we went to the private doctor. He made a check-up, glanced at my radiograph and announced my diagnosis. The specialist wrote out the prescription. I needed to take antibiotics to reduce inflammation and make special procedure through the day. After 2 weeks I was finally recovered thanks to the doctor and expensive remedies. I got rid of unpleasant symptoms, so I couldn't help rejoicing. However, physician said if I had come later, my nose inflammation would have become chronic.

The moral of the story is that our healthcare system makes people, who have no opportunity for better service, wait in queue, brook an incompetence or sometimes obvious unwillingness of doctors to work.

P.S. Always go to competent specialists, if you feel bad. A minor trouble might lead to serious consequences.
