LIFE USED TO BE DIFFERENT: Roman Bryzhatyi, 10a

My Grandfather’s Work

My grandfather was born on the 22.06.1959. Now he is 60 years old and he is pretty old now. He went through many things in his life. And one of these things is his work as a sailor. Thanks to this work he visited a great number of countries and saw many interesting things.

My grandfather didn’t use to live in rich family but they had money for happy life. He was the second child in family out of three. His father was a sailor too. When his mother gave birth to his youngest brother he had to get used to taking care of him because their mother always was on work. When he was a teen he used to catch fish in an interesting way without fishing rod and sell it. I’m used to sitting at home he is used to saying that his childhood was more interesting and after these words I always go outside for a walk with my friends. After graduation he decided that he wanted to be a sailor like his father and entered university in Odessa.

He was working on whale-fishery which was profitable and popular craft at that time. Thanks to this job my grandfather visited Antarctica and saw penguins. Moreover he visited not only Antarctica. He visited Singapore, Portugal, Spain, Italy, South America, Africa and some other countries. Sometimes he used to steal something from hotels there as a souvenir.

Also he saw a lot of different species of animals such as penguins which were rare in the USSR at that time.

However this kind of job has a lot of cons. Firstly, a voyage lasted for six months and my grandfather for a long time was getting used to living without family for a long time and it was hard for him at first . But some time later he got used to it. When I was in Odessa with my grandfather he showed me a harbor in which he arrived after his voyages . My mom and my grandmother used to meet him in that harbor. Also in that harbor you can find a monument which is dedicated to women with children who were waiting for their husbands there. The second thing which my grandfather was getting used to is 12-hour working day. He liked his job so it wasn’t so hard for him to get used for this thing as it was his hobby. Moreover he used to have a great crew which never used to be sad as he said.

And the most strangest thing he couldn’t get used to was “Antarctic summer” which lasted in October. “Antarctic summer” is the period of the year when the sun shines 24 hours a day in Antarctica. He said that sometimes he even had forgotten to sleep.

To cap it all I want to say that to be a sailor is not as easy thing as it seems to be. Some time later when my mom went to the ninth form my grandfather stopped his work as sailor and started his own business.
