BEST OF THE BEST: Hagia Sophia

  This landmark is called Hagia Sophia. It is located in Istanbul (historically Constantinople), Turkey. Tourists will be amazed by its interior decoration and greatness. It is 55 m high and 82 m long. It is famous, because it is the only temple in the world, which at first was an orthodox cathedral, and then it became a Muslim mosque.

Hagia Sophia is made of marble. The supports are made of brick. The gigantic dome system became a masterpiece of architecture of its time. There are 140 columns in Hagia Sophia. On the walls of the temple one can see frescoes depicting Christ and Our Lady and quotes from the Koran, on four large oval-shaped shields. The mosque consists of 3 storeys.

It was designed by Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. The construction was started in 360. It was ordered by Constantinus I. The Hagia Sophia was completed in 537. Sadly, it has been damaged many times since then. This temple survived an earthquake, wars and plunder. Then the supports were added. It was built for religious reasons and to hold church services. It was also built as a personification of Byzantine Empire.

Now this landmark is opened to tourists as a museum. Visitors can admire Islamic and Christian elements of architecture. One of the exhibits is Crying column. It is covered with copper and the tourists can make a wish there. There is also Cold Window, where even on the coldest day a cool breeze blows. In Hagia Sophia cat, called Glee lives. He was stroked by Barak Obama. Visitors can also play with him. Visitors can buy magnets, cups, small statues and other souvenirs near Hagia Sophia. Visitors can explore the surroundings and see ancient tombs.

The opening hours are from 9 am till 5 pm daily. The opening hours in summer are from 9 am till 7 pm daily. The admission is 72 Turkish Liras ($15). Children under 8 are admitted free of charge. Museum staff offer special audio guide. The price is 45 Liras. Visitors are allowed to take photos without flash and to touch exhibits.

Hagia Sophia is the world’s famous landmark. You will be amazed by its exciting architecture. This sight shouldn’t definitely be missed by any visitor of Istanbul area.
