DARK SIDES OF SPORT
Polina Ivanova, 11c

Each of us has ever done sports. Usually, parents send their children to different sport clubs to make them healthy and versatile. There are actually many benefits to doing sports, such as physical and mental health, it reduces stress level, increases self-esteem, improves sleep quality and reduces risk of various diseases. But there is also a dark side of sports. Now I will tell you a little about what you can face when doing sports.

A person who does or did sports for a long period of time, I mean for a period of at least three years, knows exactly and has personally faced various problems. For example, injuries. It's no secret that athletes are at constant risk of being injured. Injuries can be different, ranging from small scratches, ending with fractures of the spine. Unfortunately, after receiving such severe injuries as a fracture of the limbs or of the spine, the chances of sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of your life are quite high. I danced ballet for more than 5 years and fortunately I did not have any serious injuries. There were bruises, often in pointe shoes the fingers were rubbed until they bled. Once I sprained a ligament and could not walk normally for a month, I always limped. I couldn't do the splits for a very long time afterwards, because it was unbearable pain. I can give an example of a very terrible injury that happened to the famous figure skater Elena Berezhnaya. Once, when performing a difficult stunt on the ice, the skater's partner hit the girl's temporal bone with a skate. The impact was so strong that the bone fragments damaged the brain membrane. After several difficult operations, Elena learned to speak, walk and ride again. It sounds just unimaginable how strong this woman is, because not everyone is able to go through these difficulties and live again as before. Also, the world-famous racer Michael Schumacher, who suffered a severe head injury while skiing has been in a coma since the beginning of 2014. There is almost no chance that he will ever come out of the coma.

The second point that cannot but be mentioned is doping and various steroids. When there is a lo of money and fame at stake, everything is used that to improve the results - anabolic steroids, growth hormones, insulin, and other performance-enhancing drugs, which are harmful to the human body. Before modern drugs became a problem, athletes had tried all sorts of ways, including drinking a mixture of alcohol and raw egg before a race, in order to get an unfair advantage and an improvement in their time. In 1960 a Danish athlete died after taking drugs. Nowadays this substances are illegal, however, unfortunately, there are cases when athletes violate these rules.

In conclusion, I want to say that sports are not for weaklings. There will be obstacles, there will be troubles. But if you decide to do sports professionally, then go to your goal and win. "Nothing so exhausts and destroys the human body as physical inactivity»_Aristotle_
