Deathless Beauty of the Ukrainian Song

 Written by Lisa Belilova, 9c

A mild September dusk has descended to the city. The stars are shining like precious jewels in the black velvet sky, and the golden crescent moon has stilled in a mystery. I’m walking down the park, inbreathing the heady flower aroma. Suddenly the song is heard:

“The Moon in the sky, stars are shining
The boat is sliding over the sea”

Girls are singing a familiar folk song, which was so needed at this evening moment. Lend an attentive ear to what a beauty flows through these words. And then I’m already carried away, joining in the song. Why am I not singing a cheerful pop song or a foreign hit? Centuries are passing by, generations are changing, but a folk song stays alive, uniting souls of Ukrainians up to the present day.

Referring to the legend, the Ukrainian song was given to our nation by the God. Only look! Wide steppe under the boundless sky, green groves near rivers with crystal-clear water, fragrance of blooming gardens, singing of  a nightingale, majestic  tranquility of the mountains, boisterous chronicle of the martyr nation and fighting for the freedom and above all, there is an enchanting folk song that charms every heart.

Czech scientist Shafarik said: “Ukrainians are very rich, maybe, the richest nation among all Slavs, with their vivid folk songs. They don’t complicate matters unnecessarily or peg away while making their songs. Their songs are growing by themselves, like flowers in a green field, and no other nation in the world can be more proud of the quantity of the songs as the Ukrainians.” And it’s true. In rough times the Ukrainian nation found consolation in a frank song. And everyone who sings this song again, adds a small part of his own soul to it. That’s why a folk song is rich and actual in all times.

If you had a chance to visit a Ukrainian village at a quiet summer night, to sit near the river, then you’d definitely hear a doleful song about love:

“Blackthorn is in blossom, blackthorn is in blossom
But the blossom falls down
He who doesn’t know love
Also doesn’t know sorrow”

Times are changing, a song is changing as well, but its point, mission – to give pleasure to the people, bring happiness - remains unchangeable. However, the folk song is not only about entertainment. We learn from it about the life in the past, human joy and sorrow. Every event becomes a song, which is tightly bounded with the life of the nation. In my opinion, our folk songs have the greatest spiritual value. As for me, they represent my beloved native country better than its well-known historical monuments or famous natural sights and are especially precious for me. Sounds of a folk song inhabit every heart; they can be heard in every single place of the picturesque land, which is called Ukraine.
