The Carpathians – the Jewel of Ukraine
Written by Anna Gaysha, 9c

Love Ukraine, like sun that you love
Like wind, like grass, and like water
Whenever you're happy, in moments of gladness,
Love her, like you love your own daughter.

The passage cited above is from the sincere poem which belongs to the talented Ukrainian author Vladimir Sosiura. Our picturesque Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe. Kyiv is the capital of the country. Ukraine occupies 603 628 km² of the Earth's surface. Here you can find busy cities and cozy villages, blue rivers and seas, wide fields and high mountains, modern and ancient landmarks. Every part of the country is unique and has its own peculiarity, but now I'd like to tell you about my favorite corner of the Motherland – the Carpathians. What are the Carpathians?
A geographer will answer that the Carpathians are a range of mountains forming an arc roughly 1,500 km long across Central Europe. This range spreads in the Western Ukraine.

A nature lover will answer that the Carpathians are a real paradise. Deep lakes, high waterfalls, rapids and canyons hide between beautiful polonynas. A calm walk through the forests which consist of evergreen trees is really pleasant for everyone. If you could manage to conquer the top of the highest mountain of the Ukrainian Carpathians – majestic Hoverla (elevation: 2,061 m) clear air and indescribable view would turn your head and it would be one of the most unforgettable moments in your life.
A traveler will answer that the Carpathians are an opened chest containing a priceless treasure – our unique national traditions. Why does he say «opened»? It is not a secret that main features of Ukrainian personality are hospitality and sincerity. Kindhearted and friendly Ukrainians are always happy to greet our guests «with bread and salt». Why does he say «treasure»? Local people value our traditions all over Ukraine but the western part keeps them best of all. Every foreign can hear the sounds of bandura or kobza, try to put on national clothes (in my opinion, Ukrainian traditional costume is one of the most courtly and beautiful)... I can't help mentioning our food. Ukrainian cuisine is one of the richest in the world. Borsch (soup with cabbage and beet-roots), varenyky (the dish is made by wrapping pockets of unleavened dough around a savory or sweet filling), holubtsy (stuffed cabbage rolls) and pinch of love will make your Ukrainian dinner really delicious.
I will answer that Carpathians are the place you want to visit again and again. I am ready to take my suitcase and come to the Carpathians at any time of the year. These mountains are something more than beautiful nature for me... The Carpathians keep a lot of my memories, when I get there I feel inexplicable pride and pacification.
In conclusion, I want to say that people who are looking for the beautiful sights, delicious food, various entertainment, good music, unbelievable friendliness and love should visit our Motherland, our lovely Ukraine. These are not just beautiful words, it's the truth and you can be convinced of it by yourself.
Ukrainian peaceful doors are always open for everybody.
