My Motherland: My Beloved Town

Written by Alexandra Bobrova, 6c

My home town is called Mykolayiv. Mykolayiv is a very exciting town. It is home to ships and sailors. It got its name in honor of the victory of the Russian troops in 1788 during the capture of the Turkish fortress Ochakov, which coincided with the Day of St. Nicholas. My city was founded in 1789 by Prince Grigory Potemkin as the naval and ship city because it is located at the confluence of the rivers Ingul and the Southern Bug, sixty-five kilometers from the Black Sea.

The town’s flag and the emblem show its past and present. On my town`s flag there are two blue stripes and a ship on a white field. I think that the white colour  means peace and welfare of the residents of my city, and the two wavy blue stripes are symbols of the two rivers, where the city of Mykolayiv was born. On the emblem one can see the crown in the form of a three-pronged tower - the symbol of local government. The anchors connected with a ribbon mean shipbuilding and port business.

I love my city because I was born here, I live here and study. And wherever I travel with my parents, I miss my city. It's so peaceful and quiet, traffic is not heavy, there are a lot of green parks, churches, museums. It is not like a modern industrial city but rather like an old city with tall buildings and green squares. My city is an open book where every street has its page, and the names of streets are parts of the historical memory. Each one, even the smallest alley, has an interesting story.

For example, Admiralskaya street tells an exciting story about the school where I study. I love my school, because it is very old and has its own history, it has had a unique high-school spirit of many generations of graduates. It was opened in 1864 in Admiralskaya street, at first as girls’ high school, and then was renamed Mykolayiv high school №2. With it I relate the most interesting moments of my life, here I have friends, mentors, favourite teacher. It is like my second family and I cherish it.

I am proud of  my city, I learn its history, I get acquainted with its modern development, and I dream to be its future. And I am proud of our Ukrainian people living in my city. They are are highly educated, polite, kind, hospitable, always ready to help a neighbor. They honor the  traditions of  Ukrainian people, and never refuse to make the effort to help their city. I think this is the most precious, which may be in my town. I'll try to get all the people of the city honor the place where they were born and grew up.

I love you, Mykolayiv City!!!
