Some time ago I started to read a humorous and cognitive book. The title of this book is How To Be British Collection and it's really impressive. The book helps us to understand British and their outlook, behavior, traditions and habits. I haven't finished reading it yet, but I want to share with you my opinion about the chapter called SPEAK SLOWLY.

I have read the first part of the book under the title The How to Be British Collection. It was written by Martyn Alexander Ford and Peter Christopher Legon. This book consists of colourful cartoon illustrations with accompanying texts, which describe the usual life of the British: their habits, traditions and character in a humorous way. It is a real guide on how to get around in English. In order to be British, or at any rate to pass unnoticed in British society, the visitor must learn some iron rules of behavior in society.

One of the first things to remember by the arrival in Britain is about Terms of Endearment. Like all other peoples Britons use diminutive affectionate words in speech, such as such as dear, love and darling. Also you may be called: Precious, Honeybunch, Treasure, Bunny, Angel, Teddy Bear, Lamb, Handsome, Big Boy, Star or my Little Sausage. The best respond in this case will be your pleasant smile. If you have a desire to call an English- speaker a wetleg, fish-eye or roastbeef, it can cause great offence.

I have recently read the book under the title The How To Be British Collection. I want to tell you about the first five chapters from this book. So, what does It deal with?

It tells about specialty of this country. It describes their landscapes, the rich variety of their weather, their unrivalled achievements in cricket and football and their cherished traditions. Secondly, it explains why Great Britain is popular for visiting. This country is fairy tale land of knights and wizards, princes and pop idols, the birthplace of the industrial revolution, computers, human rights, pork scratching, evolution, lawn tennis, parliament and punk.

I’ve read some chapters from the non-fiction book under the title The How To Be British Collection. The authors of the book are Martin Ford and Peter Legion.  Chapter number 9 is extraordinary. The authors decided to give readers some advice for true pronunciation. There are four tongue-twisters in this chapter and everybody will be able to practise their English pronunciation. Now I try to read them sometimes out loud and I think that my speech is becoming better.

YOU CAN HAVE A TRY, TOO!

There's no point having perfect grammar and a vast vocabulary if no one can understand what you're saying. If you are worried about your pronunciation, PRACTISE THESE USEFUL SENTENCES AT HOME ALONE.

I have read the book under the title The How To Be British Collection. The authors of the book are Martin Ford and Peter Legion. That is a funny set of postcards dealing with the most common stereotypes of British culture, such as the weather, pronunciation, pets, fish and chips, tea and so on.

The first part is the introduction. It tells about Britain in general. The author also tells about himself and about differences of the British from other people.

Reading the wonderful humorous book under the title HOW TO BE BRITISH COLLECTION I suddenly understood I have much in common with the ideas and views of the British.

The Telephone Box

This chapter shows that people are contradictory creatures. Don’t they remember how they all wanted to own up-to-date telephones? Now each person can take his own cellphone and get in touch with friends or parents anytime and anywhere. But where is romance? Really.

31. Shopping

When I was reading this chapter, I was really shocked… The British invented the idea of the fixed price to avoid the embarrassment caused by bargaining for things. They do not like pushy sales assistants, which is why shopping in hot countries can be such an ordeal for Brits. The author recommends visitors NEVER TO TRY to beat down the price of an article. He even advises the visitor to Britain to pay a little more than the asked price. It’s unbelievable! Is it true or is it famous British humour? In my country, there are a lot of people who will be looking for a lower price to save3 or 4 hryvnas.

Translation Contest

На підтримку ініціативи Президента України «2016 – Рік англійської мови в Україні» учні 10-Б і 11-А класу взяли участь у Першому регіональному конкурсі перекладачів. Фіналістами конкурсу стали Даніїл Котов 10-Б і Андрій Удотов 11-А, і обидва посіли перше місце, тим самим в черговий раз підтверджуючи неабиякі здібності, якими володіють учні другої гімназії.

Для учнів 5-7 класів було проведено «Тотальний диктант» - конкурс на найграмотнішого учня. Вітаємо переможницю серед учнів 7 класів Недбай Софію, яка не зробила жодної помилки!!! Брижатий Роман, Шамян Артур (7а) та Корінний Владислав (7в) також показали гарні результати.
