I Always Return to My Motherland As to My Mother
Written by Maria Oberemok, 10a - the winner of the third prize
Ukraine is my motherland. I am so thankful to the God that I was born and I am living here. Despite everything it is the best place in the world and with pride in my heart I always say that I am Ukrainian.
Endless plains, charming forests, majestic mountains, rivers and fertile land are the real beauty of Ukraine. Incredible landscapes enchant you at first sight and you can never forget them. Ukrainians are very cheerful and friendly. We have got a lot of traditions and holidays. The history of Ukraine is long and the fate of the nation was difficult. We are proud of our courageous countrymen: Hetmans Bohdan Hmelnitsky and Ivan Mazepa; unsurpassed masters of the Ukrainian word and fighters for justice and independence: Taras Shevchenko, Lesya Ukrainka, Ivan Franko and Michalo Kotsyubynsky…

My Motherland: My Beloved Town
Written by Alexandra Bobrova, 6c
My home town is called Mykolayiv. Mykolayiv is a very exciting town. It is home to ships and sailors. It got its name in honor of the victory of the Russian troops in 1788 during the capture of the Turkish fortress Ochakov, which coincided with the Day of St. Nicholas. My city was founded in 1789 by Prince Grigory Potemkin as the naval and ship city because it is located at the confluence of the rivers Ingul and the Southern Bug, sixty-five kilometers from the Black Sea.
The town’s flag and the emblem show its past and present. On my town`s flag there are two blue stripes and a ship on a white field. I think that the white colour means peace and welfare of the residents of my city, and the two wavy blue stripes are symbols of the two rivers, where the city of Mykolayiv was born. On the emblem one can see the crown in the form of a three-pronged tower - the symbol of local government. The anchors connected with a ribbon mean shipbuilding and port business.

Terrible Word
Written by Valery Dychakovsky, 10a
Have you ever felt pain in your heart?
We’ve forgotten peace and the land full of love.
The only word - “the war” - destroys the world.
Have you seen that pain with your eyes?
Who can protect us from these cries?
Where’s the survival, the way to stay alive?
Do you want to be the victim of this war?
Just one word can decide the future of the world.

I Love the Treasures of My Country
Written by Marina Ikonomu, 6a
Ukraine is my motherland and I am proud that I am Ukrainian. I was born in Ukraine, I grow up and I study here. I love its picturesque views - fields, rivers, forests and mountains.
Ukraine is situated in the central part of Europe. Its neighbour to the east is Russia, to the north is Belarus, and to the west are Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, and Romania. To the south it is washed by the two magnificent seas: the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. In the west of Ukraine there are the lofty Carpathian Mountains. How beautiful is Hoverla, the highest top of Ukraine, which is 2061metres high. How nice it is to stand on its top and to feel the wind whistling in the ears, and to enjoy the views.
I am proud of the capital of Ukraine, the unforgettable city of Kiev. It is very old and beautiful. There are many schools, factories, museums, and theatres. The city was named after one of the three brothers, his name is Kyi. Through the whole Ukraine the powerful Dnieper river flows. Its length is 2201 kilometres. The name of the river has the Scythian origin and is translated as «deep river».

My Native Land
Written by Alice Holovchenko, 6a
Ukraine is rich and multifarious; each region has its own originality. I live in Mykolayiv Region; it vividly differs from other regions of Ukraine. I think it really has a unique character, thanks to its picturesque nature and high economic potential.
Mykolayiv Region is located in the steppe zone of the southern Ukraine, it borders on Odessa, Kirovograd, Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson regions and is washed by the Black Sea in the south. Endless grain fields are able to feed more than a million people. The adornment of the area is the life-giving Southern Bug River, one of the most powerful Ukrainian rivers. The climate is favorable for health.
Mykolayiv region is special and the most native for me. This is my small motherland. Love to this land generates the feeling that Ukraine is the greatest and a pride of it in my heart and soul. I was born in Mykolayiv, my parents were born here, my family lives here. I love walking along the streets of my hometown, admiring its architecture and monitoring its development.

The Carpathians – the Jewel of Ukraine
Written by Anna Gaysha, 9c
Love Ukraine, like sun that you love
Like wind, like grass, and like water
Whenever you're happy, in moments of gladness,
Love her, like you love your own daughter.
The passage cited above is from the sincere poem which belongs to the talented Ukrainian author Vladimir Sosiura. Our picturesque Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe. Kyiv is the capital of the country. Ukraine occupies 603 628 km² of the Earth's surface. Here you can find busy cities and cozy villages, blue rivers and seas, wide fields and high mountains, modern and ancient landmarks. Every part of the country is unique and has its own peculiarity, but now I'd like to tell you about my favorite corner of the Motherland – the Carpathians. What are the Carpathians?
A geographer will answer that the Carpathians are a range of mountains forming an arc roughly 1,500 km long across Central Europe. This range spreads in the Western Ukraine.

Deathless Beauty of the Ukrainian Song
Written by Lisa Belilova, 9c
A mild September dusk has descended to the city. The stars are shining like precious jewels in the black velvet sky, and the golden crescent moon has stilled in a mystery. I’m walking down the park, inbreathing the heady flower aroma. Suddenly the song is heard:
“The Moon in the sky, stars are shining
The boat is sliding over the sea”
Girls are singing a familiar folk song, which was so needed at this evening moment. Lend an attentive ear to what a beauty flows through these words. And then I’m already carried away, joining in the song. Why am I not singing a cheerful pop song or a foreign hit? Centuries are passing by, generations are changing, but a folk song stays alive, uniting souls of Ukrainians up to the present day.
